Cozumel allowed me to swap my mundane lifestyle for everything I was looking for. And I’m doing it for mere CENTS on my dollar.
Are you dreaming of a beautiful island where you can live comfortably without spending a fortune? Cozumel, located in Quintana Roo, Mexico, is the perfect place for you.
The cost of living in Cozumel is much lower than in the United States, making it an ideal spot for both visitors and those looking to stay long-term.
Sure, it’s not the absolute LOWEST price you’ll find around the globe. But proximity to my family, ease of access with almost all airlines, and operating my business within the same or near same timezone really mattered to me when I made my decision to hang my hat here.
Let me give you a brief rundown of the expense expectations if you’re considering making a move.
Affordable Rent: Your Cozy Home for Around $500/month 🏡💰
One of the biggest expenses in the US is rent.
In Cozumel, you can rent a nice apartment or a small house for about $500 per month. It’s big enough for two people, and that includes utilities (typically you just pay electricity).
Bump that up to $750 and now you’re living like royalty.
If you want to live near the water or in the center of San Miguel de Cozumel, there are many affordable options. This means more money for fun activities and enjoying island life.
With prices this low you could sell your home and relocate without needing to purchase a property ever again.
If the idea of paying rent makes your skin crawl, we’ve hooked up with Vidamar Real Estate to get you access to their Ultimate Guide to Cozumel Real Estate package. Inside you’ll get:

This is HUGE value to anyone considering making the jump. This package valued at $297 is yours FREE for referring just one friend or family member to the Cozumel Collective.
Dining and Drinks: Enjoy a Cerveza for $2 or Less 🍻🍴
Eating out and drinking in Cozumel is perfectly affordable. You can buy a cerveza (beer) for just $2 at local spots and even less at food stores.
Meals at local restaurants usually cost between $5 to $10, so you can enjoy tasty Mexican dishes without spending too much.
And for those special occasions where you prefer to gaze at the beautiful sunset with a deliciously bottle of red, scarf down top-notch meals with your foodie partner, you can do it without emptying your savings account.
Groceries and Daily Needs: Save with Local Markets 🛒🥦
This is a big, big area of savings for me. If you’re active, and enjoy a full fridge and variety in your kitchen, food prices are going up, up, and away in USA/Canada.
The first thing I noticed in Coz is that produce and proteins were pound-for-pound less money. Fruits. Less money.
But a bags of chips–now that’s where the supermarkets make their money. It’s like these mega corps are looking out for your best interest and not taking advantage of you. It’s not a bad thing.
I was spending about $325 USD/month on groceries for myself. The same list in Cozumel can cost me only $200. So go ahead, buy that extra rib-eye, you deserve it.
Transportation: Get Around Without Spending a Lot 🚗🚌
Getting around Cozumel is simple and affordable. If you prefer driving, fuel prices are generally lower, and the island is small enough that you won’t need to spend much time or money on transportation. Taxis and local transit are also cheap ways to travel.
If you don’t want to drive, post-up in the Centro, and you can walk anywhere in 5-15 minutes.
Lot’s of people buy bicycles to help get around and they double-up as your daily or weekly exercise routine. A spin around the island helps you counter your frequent visits to the taco-stands.
Utilities and Internet: Stay Comfortable and Connected 💡📶
Typically rentals include water and usually internet. You pay electricity. The kilowatt consumption fees are extremely reasonable–just try not using your Air Conditioning when you’re not at home. 🌎
Cooking, cleaning, working on my laptop, air conditioning most of the day, and Netflix at night: I am regularly under $50/month and that was for 2 people.
Another mega factor in my choice of Cozumel was the access to amazing cell coverage and high-speed internet. Not only is it affordable, but it’s consistently high performing. I run digital webinars of 50-100 people and my connection doesn’t skip a beat.
Entertainment and Leisure: Fun Activities for Less 🎉🏄♂️
Cozumel offers plenty of fun and affordable activities. From shore diving in Cozumel to exploring local festivals and cultural events, there’s always something to do.
Outdoor activities, like beach outings and hiking, are free or cost just a few dollars. For those who love diving, rental gear and dive shop services are reasonably priced, making it easy to explore the beautiful marine life without spending a lot.
Healthcare and Insurance: Quality Care at Lower Costs 🏥💉
Healthcare in Cozumel is accessible and much cheaper than in the US.
I fell ill once in Cozumel. Very ill. I went to one doctor, paid under $2 USD (yes, under two dollars) to see the Doctor, and an extra $3 USD to get an antibiotic injection.
Basic medical services and prescriptions are affordable, and many people find that they can get private health insurance without spending too much. This ensures you can stay healthy and safe while enjoying life on the island.
Comparing Costs: Cozumel vs. the US 🇲🇽🇺🇸
To see how much you can save, let’s compare typical monthly expenses between Cozumel and an average city in the United States:
Expense | Cozumel | US (Avg City) |
---|---|---|
Rent (1-bed) | $500 | $1500-$3000 |
Groceries | $150-$200 | $300-$600 |
Dining Out | $100-$200 | $300-$600 |
Transportation | $100-$200 | $200-$400 |
Utilities | $50-$100 | $150-$300 |
Internet (if needed) | $30 | $60-$100 |
Entertainment | $50-$100 | $200-$400 |
Healthcare | $50-$100 | $300-$600+ |
TOTAL: | $1030 - $1430 | $3010 - $6000 |
Think of what you can do with an extra couple thousand dollars in your pocket–each month.
