Coffee people are a special breed.

Some of us need that first cup just to open our eyes… others treat coffee like a full-on art form. Either way, the world has come up with some incredibly creative ways to brew, shake, whip, and sweeten the humble coffee bean.

What it is

Café de Olla is a traditional Mexican coffee brewed with:

  • dark coffee grounds

  • cinnamon sticks

  • piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar)

  • and occasionally a whisper of clove or orange peel

It’s cooked slowly in a clay pot — the olla de barro — which gives the drink a deeper, earthier flavor you can’t get from a machine.

Where it came from

The origins go back to the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920).

Soldaderas (women who traveled with and supported the troops) brewed this spiced coffee for soldiers to keep them warm, energized, and comforted during long marches.

The clay pot wasn’t just a tradition — it actually helped keep the coffee hotter, longer.

And the piloncillo? That was the energy boost of the era.

Over time, Café de Olla became a national favorite — especially in colder regions and rural towns — but coastal destinations like Cozumel serve it too, especially around holidays or cool early mornings.

When to drink it in Cozumel

  • Early mornings before a brisk walk 🐾

  • Rainy-season afternoons when the breeze hits just right

  • Holiday gatherings (it pairs ridiculously well with sweet bread)

  • Anytime you want the comforting taste of old-Mexico nostalgia

How to order it

¿Puedo tener un café de olla, por favor?

Not every café keeps it on the menu daily — but the ones that do, take pride in doing it right.
